New Healthcare Cost and Quality Estimator Tool Available from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida

Blue Cross/Blue Shield members can now compare the cost and quality of health services before they receive them.

A new transparency tool, “Know Before You Go,” designed to help members navigate through the healthcare system, is now available from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida (BCBSF). Available on the BCBSF website, the tool provides information based on hospital data reported by CMS, which is available to the public.

There are three categories a member may select within the tool: Imaging, Office Visit or Surgery. The tool is customized to a member’s benefits and takes into account deductibles, copays and/or coinsurance amounts and estimates how much a treatment or procedure will cost. In addition, the tool:

  • Allows a comparison of up to five providers in a single transaction
  • Uses real-time claim adjudication to estimate costs; and
  • Provides member-level estimated liability based on contracted benefits

Later this year, members will also be able to rate their provider experience through Zagat®, a patient rating tool, when using "Know Before You Go." Providers will be rated on the following six categories:

  • Personal information
  • Trustworthiness
  • Friendliness and caring
  • Communication skills
  • Availability
  • Facilities and environment

Members will also be allowed to anonymously enter comments regarding providers and the service(s) rendered. These comments will be screened prior to being posted. Members may update comments, but can rate a provider only one time for a specific visit.

While the tool provides estimated costs on the most commonly used health services, members can get additional estimates by calling BCBSF.
