Kaiser Permanente, along with five major organizations including HBO, have launched a major public-health campaign during May aimed at obesity, excess weight and their effects on the nation’s health.
Integral to the campaign is the launch of The Weight of the Nation, a four-part documentary series that will be available to all cable subscribers, not just HBO subscribers, on May 14th and 15th. There will be an option of viewing the films with Spanish subtitles. Along with HBO, Kaiser is working with National Institutes of Health, the Institute of Medicine, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In conjunction with The Weight of the Nation rollout, Kaiser Permanente’s Care Stories blog shares accounts from four members who shed pounds by changing their lifestyles dramatically. Two of the members, an adult and teenager, were told they were pre-diabetic, and rather than taking medication, they opted to eat healthier and exercise, ultimately shedding weight and reducing their precondition. The third story features a couple with genetic dispositions to diabetes; they too improved their health with diet and exercise.
May 1st was declared The Weight of the Nation Day and HBO hosted a series of events around the country to raise awareness, educate communities about the risks of obesity and provide resources for healthier living. The Whole Kids Foundation and Global Tap provided 100 salad bars and 100 permanent water stations in schools across the country so that thousands of children would have access to fresh fruits and vegetables and clean water.
As a lead-in to the series’ broadcast. HBO screened episodes of the series in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. Cleveland and Hawaii. Kaiser Permanente hosted additional screenings in all eight of its regions, culminating in Portland, Oregon on May 7.
