Transparency e-Tools:
Healthcare IT That Meets Employer,
Consumer and Accreditation Demands
The demand for transparency within the healthcare industry is growing. As consumer-driven healthcare enrollment is on the rise, more consumers are insisting on transparency in the cost and quality of their healthcare. To keep up with this demand, employers are seeking health plans that can supply healthcare-related Web technologies. To further this movement, some healthcare organizations now require specific Web-based tools before conferring accreditation.
July 2, 2007
MANASQUAN, NJ, USA — While there are still several hurdles left to overcome, the vision of transparency includes an informed, involved and connected healthcare consumer who effectively navigates the Web for decision support, comparison-shopping and healthcare spending management.
In Transparency e-Tools: Healthcare IT That Meets Employer, Consumer and Accreditation Demands,, several healthcare professionals describe the challenges of developing Web technologies that will support decision-making and promote good health, building effective performance metrics, structuring incentive programs and involving and engaging people in these programs.

QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO JOHN MILLS, DIRECTOR OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, HIP HEALTH PLAN:
- “Consumers are demanding more information about healthcare as costs increase and employers move to Health Reimbursement Accounts and Health Savings Accounts. Employers are starting to make robust tools a part of their decision-making process. It’s an exciting time because the Internet creates an opportunity to provide this information in a way that wasn’t possible 10 to 15 years ago. Most health plans have made an initial investment in these decision-support tools, and as the tools become more robust, there’s greater adoption of them. We’re expanding that investment because interest is growing in them.”
QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:

- “Healthcare consumers are demanding transparency in cost and quality of care now more than ever, and the Web offers instant access and updates to this information. As competition for quality ratings heats up, the authors in this report have done the legwork in this arena. They offer practical advice for employers and health plans seeking to meet their population's and accreditors' requests for online healthcare decision support tools."
