Healthcare Publisher to Take Children to Work
and to Work Out

Manasquan, N.J., USA, April 12, 2006 – When children of Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN) employees join their parents at work on April 27, they’ll focus not only on shaping their futures, but also on evaluating their physical shape. Shaping Their Futures is the theme of the fourth annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day organized by the MS. Foundation for Women. Participating for the second straight year, HIN plans to give its “working” children a first-hand look at the healthcare publishing industry as well as the importance of healthy lifestyles and workplace wellness.

Upon arrival, the children will don pedometers to participate in Step Up, an eight-week program developed by Excellus Blue Cross® Blue Shield® that HIN has adopted as its own workplace wellness initiative. As the children complete a range of multi-media tasks designed to measure the healthy lifestyle efforts of the healthcare publisher’s customers, they’ll also measure the number of steps they take that day and record their meal intake and healthy activities along with HIN employees.

“As a publisher and an Internet presence in the healthcare industry, we are keenly aware of the focus on wellness to boost outcomes and reduce healthcare costs, and we want to show our children how important this is,” explains Melanie Matthews, HIN executive vice president. “At the same time, as parents and employers, we want to show them that we care about their health and hope they’ll adopt healthy behaviors that will improve their generation’s health outcomes in the future.”

Ms. Matthews, who will bring daughter Rebecca to work that day, points to a 2005 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that found that about 16 percent of children today are overweight, with another 15 percent at risk of becoming too heavy. Overweight children are also at increased risk of ailments such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. “Behaviors centered around physical activity and good nutrition are the cornerstone of preventing obesity in children and adolescents,” says Matthews.

Activities planned for HIN’s Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day reflect the diverse activities of the healthcare publisher and will include:

  • Conducting an online survey on the healthy lifestyles of HIN’s customers, then compiling and emailing the results to survey respondents;
  • Creating a Healthy Lifestyles calendar using images and data they uncover during the online survey and supervised Internet research;
  • Creating and recording podcasts on lessons in healthy lifestyles that will be available from the HIN website at www.hin.com;
  • Participating in workplace wellness initiatives such as enjoying a healthy lunch and snack followed by a lunchtime walk.

The children will also assist with the daily sales and production functions of HIN’s business, Ms. Matthews said.
