Physician Extenders: Survey Shows Use by Four out of Five
Healthcare Organizations
More than four out of five healthcare providers use
physician extenders for patient care and counseling,
according to an April 2007 e-survey by the Healthcare
Intelligence Network (HIN). These findings are detailed
in a free downloadable HIN white paper.
June 8, 2007
MANASQUAN, NJ, USA — The role and use of
physician extenders has been steadily increasing in the
medical world, helping physicians to meet very high demands
and leading to significantly higher productivity. Physician
extenders hold a great deal of significance and have the
potential to play an integral part in the medical arena.
Over 110 hospitals, physician organizations and health plan
providers participated in HIN’s April 2007 non-scientific
online survey, reporting on the role and effectiveness of
physician extenders at their respective organizations. Of the
professionals who responded to the survey, 87 percent of the
hospitals and 83.3 percent of the physicians reported that
they primarily employ nurse practitioners in the physician
extender role, followed by physician assistants, clinical
nurse specialists, and certified diabetes specialists.

Survey Highlights:
-
The most common responsibilities of physician extenders
as reported by responding hospitals and physician organizations,
which include direct patient care and patient education and
counseling.
-
The impact of physician extenders on responding
organizations, including greater productivity, more efficiency
and lower costs.
-
The challenges of overcoming initial patient hesitation
toward physician extenders, including fear of “less optimal”
care than would be received from a physician.
-
Who’s reimbursing for physician extenders, based on
the surprising responses by health plan representatives.
QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:

- “The responsibilities of physician extenders in a
healthcare organization are vast, and they can add greatly to
the productivity of a practice as well as significantly
lengthen its reach. Nevertheless, more than 40 percent of
health plans do not reimburse healthcare providers for the
services of physician extenders. Given the state of primary
care today, physician extenders can be a valuable resource to
keep overall patient satisfaction as well as general practice
productivity on the rise.”
