Over Two-Thirds of Organizations Target Depression via DM Programs, HIN e-Survey Finds

Hospitals as Medical Homes
In an October 2008 e-survey from the Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN), over 250 healthcare professionals shared how their organizations are targeting depression as part of their disease management initiatives.

December 16, 2008

MANASQUAN, NJ, USA — According to a Duke School of Medicine study, depression can increase the risk of death in patients with heart failure. Other studies have associated depression with an increased risk of osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, diabetes and cerebral vascular disease and concluded that treating elders for depression improves functional outcomes, decreases pain and improves overall quality of life. With that data in mind, it’s no wonder 67.2 percent of over 250 healthcare professionals responding to HIN's e-survey target depression as part of their organization’s DM programs. This statistic comes from HIN’s latest white paper, “Targeting Depression Through Disease Management,” a complimentary e-summary of the results of its latest e-survey on this topic. HIN’s latest white paper provides a snapshot of successful depression management programs that are impacting health care expenditures and outcomes.

The five-page “Targeting Depression Through Disease Management” white paper also gives details on:

  • The modes through which organizations offer depression management;

  • The barriers they’ve faced in launching a depression management program;

  • The real ROI they are seeing as a result of their programs;

  • And more!

“Nearly two-thirds of responding healthcare organizations told us that they do include depression management as pat of their organization’s DM offering. This is significant because there is much data available that supports the notion that treating depression can also improve overall health outcomes for the patient.”
