Majority of Organizations Feeling Impact of Primary Care Problems, Finds HIN e-Survey

Reimbursement, access and healthcare IT — the three biggest issues in U.S. primary care, according to the more than 130 employers, health plans, hospitals and health systems, health coaching organizations, pharmaceutical companies, physician practices, disease management companies and other healthcare professionals that responded to the Healthcare Intelligence Network's (HIN) monthly e-survey. HIN has released "The State of Primary Care: A Primary Concern for U.S. Healthcare," a complimentary e-summary of the results of its latest e-survey on the state of U.S. healthcare.

August 14, 2008

MANASQUAN, NJ, USA — Many factors are affecting primary care in the United States — a predicted shortfall of primary care physicians, new models of care, unchanged models of reimbursement, a focus on quality initiatives and increased demands for healthcare IT. Respondents to HIN's e-survey noted how these factors are playing a role in their organizations and the effects they are subsequently feeling. What are responding organizations doing to improve the state of primary care in their practices? HIN's latest white paper gets straight to the heart of this issue and offers several successful initiatives organizations are using to improve primary care.

"We instituted a family practice residency program 10 years ago, and we leveraged that to attract faculty and graduates to replace/expand our aging PCP workforce," said one hospital/health system respondent.

A responding physician practice noted they are implementing "in-house specialists and improved customer service" to improve primary care.

"We are increasing our efforts at the legislative level to get incentives for physicians and loan forgiveness," said another responding physician practice.

The three-page The State of Primary Care: A Primary Concern for U.S. Healthcare white paper contains commentary on how healthcare organizations are:

  • Overcoming primary care challenges;
  • Addressing demands on the PCP; and
  • Developing new initiatives in primary care.

"More than 80 percent of responding healthcare organizations told us that reimbursement, access and healthcare IT are among the primary care issues impacting their practices. Thankfully, many organizations are launching initiatives to eradicate these problems and this white paper provides several examples," said Matthews. "Problems in primary care are beginning to become overwhelming, and with the predicted PCP shortages as well as other changes taking place in primary care, its future is looking grim. The healthcare industry must come together and address these issues now before the state of U.S. primary care worsens."
