QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:

"A study published in 2010 in JAMA found that emergency department use by Medicaid patients is now more than five times the rate of emergency department use by patients with private insurance. Additionally, 12 percent of respondents to our 2010 Reducing Avoidable ER Visits survey reported that Medicaid beneficiaries are responsible for the majority of avoidable ER visits. The collaborative approach by these Ohio Medicaid organizations to ensure appropriate ER use will be useful for any Medicaid entity hoping to reduce avoidable ER and hospital utilization and related costs in its populations."
