QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:

"Many avoidable emergency room and hospital admissions occur simply because patients don't understand how to take their medication. The community pharmacist is the first line of defense in improving compliance with prescribed medication. In our 2010 Medication Adherence survey, 35 percent of respondents said the pharmacist had primary contact with patients for the purposes of improving medication adherence, and 69 percent include a pharmacist on their medication adherence teams."
