Use of Cash Incentives for Health Program Participation Doubled from 2009 to 2010, Survey Finds

Benchmarks in Health & Wellness Incentives, 2010 Edition
The use of most types of cash incentives for health program participation at least doubled from 2009 to 2010, according to the second annual Health & Wellness Incentives e-survey by the Healthcare Intelligence Network.

June 29, 2010

MANASQUAN, NJ, USA — The use of economic incentives to drive engagement and results from wellness and prevention programs continues to proliferate, both as a response to escalating healthcare costs and to the shift of more health ownership to consumers. HIN's second annual Health & Wellness Incentives e-survey found the use of most types of cash incentives for health program participation at least doubled from 2009 to 2010. The use of cash payments increased from 32.5 percent in 2009 to 82.2 percent in 2010.

This is one of the findings included in Benchmarks in Health & Wellness Incentives, 2010 Edition, an all-new follow-up to the best-selling 2009 edition. This resource is packed with actionable new data on incentives activity, including the growing trends toward integrating incentives with health benefits and financial penalties for individuals with certain health risks. The exclusive 2010 report compares valuable data from the 2009 survey and provides feedback from 139 organizations on the growing interest in offering incentives for participation in health improvement programs and popularity of incentives for HRA completion.
