Second Annual Survey on Medication Adherence: How Technology and Community Pharmacists Can Help
![]() August 29, 2011 Sea Girt, NJ, USA — Patients who take medications as doctors direct may save the healthcare system as much as $7,800 per patient annually, according to a CVS Caremark study released this year. They also are more likely to stay out of the hospital and emergency rooms. HIN's second annual survey on tactics to improve medication adherence asks respondents how they use technology as well as community pharmacists to improve medication compliance in their populations. More healthcare organizations are engaging community or retail pharmacists in medication adherence programs as well as taking advantage of mobile technology, says the healthcare publisher. Complete the second annual survey on medication adherence. Medication non-adherence is the greatest barrier to reducing hospital readmissions, said more than a quarter of respondents to HIN's 2010 survey on reducing readmissions. Of 1.8 billion prescriptions dispensed annually in the United States, only 50 percent are taken correctly by the patient, according to the World Health Organization. The Healthcare Intelligence Network invites all healthcare organizations to take the survey by September 30 and describe their efforts to improve levels of medication adherence and compliance. Responses will be kept strictly confidential, and a summary of survey responses will be e-mailed to respondents once it is complied. Complete the second annual survey on medication adherence. QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:
"This year's survey will capture more data on the community pharmacist his or her specific roles in improving medication adherence and reimbursement levels. These individuals are on the front lines of medication adherence. We presented one webinar this year in which the organizations were piloting the training of community pharmacists in motivational interviewing to improve medication adherence."
