New Market Research Documents the Changing Role of the Healthcare Case Manager: More Colocation, Coaching and Crisis Management
![]() March 17, 2011 SEA GIRT, NJ, USA —Not only are more healthcare organizations utilizing case managers, but the practice of embedding case managers at the point of care has become de rigueur, according to HIN's second annual Healthcare Case Management e-survey conducted in January 2011. For example, the number of case managers working in hospital admissions offices doubled from 2010 to 2011. Additionally, the contemporary case manager conducts more home visits, manages more crises and participates more frequently in quality improvement activities in 2011 than in 2010. This year's survey also provided new metrics on case managers’ health coaching duties. Care coordination and patient education continue to be the top healthcare case manager duties in 2011, closely followed by discharge planning. More results from the survey are available in 2011 Benchmarks in Healthcare Case Management, a complimentary downloadable HIN white paper. QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:
"In tandem with disease management efforts, the healthcare industry is implementing targeted case management interventions across the health continuum to reduce consumption of resources and shorten hospital stays. This frequently means positioning the case manager at the point of care, a practice that is on the upswing."
