Majority of Healthcare Organizations Have Created a Medication Adherence Program
![]() April 8, 2010 MANASQUAN, NJ, USA — According to a Brigham and Women's Hospital study, medication non-adherence is common for newly prescribed medications treating chronic conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes. "2010 Benchmarks in Medication Adherence," a new complimentary downloadable HIN white paper, documents the growing number of medication management programs with a goal of decreasing rates of medication non-adherence and to also help decrease medical costs caused by this issue. Nearly 65 percent of respondents to the HIN medication adherence e-survey have already created a medication adherence program and almost 57 percent who do not have a program will create one this year. The white paper summarizes new survey results in which 107 healthcare organizations describe their medication adherence programs, the conditions and populations that are targeted for the program, and barriers to medication adherence.

QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:
"With medication non-adherence linked to $290 billion in increased medical costs and the culprit in many hospitalizations and readmissions, it is not a surprise that healthcare organizations are focused on creating medication adherence programs to control these issues. This new white paper highlights this growing focus on adherence programs, how such programs can decrease costs caused by poor medication adherence and improve a patient's quality of life."
