A new report by the Healthcare Intelligence Network found the cost of medication is the greatest barrier to achieving medication adherence for respondents. The exclusive report provides actionable information from 107 organizations on their efforts to improve medication adherence and compliance.
June 4, 2010
MANASQUAN, NJ, USA — Half of the 1.8 billion prescriptions dispensed annually in the U.S. are taken incorrectly by the patient, according to the World Health Organization. HIN's January 2010 Medication Adherence e-survey found the cost of medication is the greatest barrier to achieving medication adherence, according to 57.4 percent of respondents. Whether it be the cost of the medications for the individual or the larger costs associated with program administration, the survey found that financial issues in a floundering economy have negative impacts on medication adherence levels. A new, exclusive report, 2010 Benchmarks in Improving Medication Adherence, provides actionable information from 107 healthcare organizations on their efforts to improve medication adherence and compliance in their populations and the impact that medication therapy management programs are having on adherence levels, medication costs, ER visits, hospital and nursing home admissions, risk of death and other areas of concern. QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:
Click here for Melanie Matthews's profile. "In addition to providing results from all responses, this report takes a closer look at medication adherence programs in use by health plans and hospitals. An analysis of responses to the survey revealed a strong effort by respondents to improve medicationadherence levels. Medication non-adherence is one of the chief reasons for readmission of Medicare patients to the hospital. Therefore, when medication adherence is properly managed, many readmissions to the hospital can be avoided, which saves money and time for hospitals, payors and patients."
