Dear Healthcare Intelligence Network Client,

HIN Managing Editor Patricia Donovan

At press time, CMS still had not released its anxiously awaited proposed rule on accountable care organizations. However, new market research on ACO awareness and participation indicates that the industry isn't waiting for CMS's blessing to explore ACO architecture. 14 percent of 228 respondents to our 2011 survey on ACOs already participate in an ACO, with another 38 percent planning to do so in the coming year. This week's featured white paper on ACO Readiness summarizes the results of this landmark survey.

As we launch our third annual survey on health and wellness incentives, it's interesting to note that HHS is offering $1 million to states to incent Medicaid beneficiaries to adopt healthy behaviors. Premera Blue Cross Director of Member Engagement Neal Sofian recently described some new carrots to engage the chronically ill and those nearing the end of life.
