How Do You Screen for Depression
in Diabetes Patients?

"Twenty-five percent of people with diabetes or other chronic conditions suffer from either mild or serious depression, and that's a main topic that we always address. We screen 100 percent of our patients using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) for depression. We have integrated social workers on staff at almost 100 percent of our sites. The PHQ results are one of our clinical quality measures we track; organizationally we have a depression screening rate of over 90 percent of all patients, and we are doing a better job at picking this up. It also helps to have health psychology built within the team.

We try to have social workers physically present in the medicine section. In some sites we are able to do it, but at other older sites with limited exam rooms we have not been able to do it. It would be ideal to integrate them physically, but we have integrated them by doing much of this work."

Kathy Brieger is a contributor to Patient-Centered Diabetes Management: Driving Outcomes with Education and Behavior Change, a 55-page special report that takes an in-depth look at three patient-centered programs for diabetes management that are improving clinical outcomes and bending the cost curve for program participants.
