Meet Your Speakers

Nathan Kaufman is a senior vice president of Healthcare Strategy for ACS Healthcare Solutions and former president and founder of The KAUFMAN Group, an established San Diego-based consulting company. Throughout his career, he has held executive positions in a wide range of healthcare companies, including president and chief operating officer of an imaging center company.

Kaufman is a nationally renowned expert in the areas of peak performing hospitals and physician groups, hospital strategy, physician compensation, integrated delivery systems, managed care, joint ventures, and dispute resolution, and has been called upon as an expert witness in healthcare arbitration cases.

Kaufman is a noted lecturer and author on topics related to strategies achieving peak performance, managed care, hospital-physician transactions, and joint ventures. He regularly speaks on these topics and others for numerous health system organizations and healthcare associations throughout the county.

His educational credentials include an MS in Health Systems from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS in Psychology from Emory University, and he is an Associate Professor at California State University, Los Angeles.

Dr. Kongstvedt is a partner in the Health/Managed Care Consulting Serivces at Accenture in the Reston, Va., office. He has 11 years consulting experience and 20 years of experience at the senior-most levels of health plans, including managed care, health insurance and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. In addition to his industry experience, Dr. Kongstvedt is the primary author and editor of three books currently in print: The Managed Health Care Handbook, Fourth Edition; The Essentials of Managed Health Care, Fourth Edition; and Managed Care: What it Is and How it Works, Second Edition. Dr. Kongstvedt has also led industry benchmarking studies and worked in medical management.

Steven T. Valentine is president of The Camden Group. With more than 25 years of healthcare consulting experience, he has considerable expertise in the areas of strategic planning, business transactions, mergers, hospital-medical group relationships, and financial analysis. Valentine was the issue editor and an early pioneer on hospital turnarounds (topics in HealthCare Financing: Financially Troubled Hospitals). He is a nationally recognized author and speaker on healthcare issues. Valentine is often quoted in Modern Healthcare, Managed Care Outlook, Los Angeles Times, and Health Care Leaders, as well as other publications. He is frequently invited to present his assessment of the industry trends and its future outlook.

Valentine has directed numerous strategic planning and merger engagements for a wide variety of healthcare organizations. He is a recognized facilitator of hospital board, medical staff, and management retreats. Valentine is on the editorial board of two publications and a panel expert on another. He also sits on the Board and Chairs the Audit Committee of HealthCare Partners, Ltd., a MSO managing over 500,000 lives. Additionally, Valentine serves on the Program Advisory Board at the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development, Partners in Care Foundation, Healthcare Leadership Report, Alliance Imaging, Inc. and Gerson Lehrman Group’s Council of Healthcare Advisors. Prior to joining The Camden Group, he was an engagement executive in Ernst & Young's Health Care Business Advisory Group. His previous experience included senior positions at Amherst Associates, Pacific Health Resources, National Medical Enterprises, and the Health Systems Agency of San Diego and Imperial Counties. He was selected by California Medicine as one of California's top 100 most influential people, and he also received a similar honor for Los Angeles County from the Los Angeles Business Journal. He was honored with the USC Health Services Administration Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Award.

Valentine earned his bachelor's degree from San Diego State University and his master's in health services administration from the University of Southern California. He also completed the Ernst & Young Management program with the Kellogg School at Northwestern University.
