What's the ROI from Reducing Readmissions? This Week's Challenge: Reducing avoidable hospital readmissions is a way to glean savings from the healthcare system and improve the quality of care that patients receive. We wanted to see the ROI generated by programs focused on reducing readmissions. Click here to view a printable version of the chart.

What We Learned: The Healthcare Intelligence Network's Second Annual Reducing Hospital Readmissions e-survey conducted in December 2010 captured how 90 healthcare organizations are reducing readmissions in their populations. Respondents reported the following ROI from their programs to reduce readmissions:

  • Less than 2:1 ROI: 2.3 percent

  • Between 2:1 and 3:1 ROI: 11.6 percent

  • Between 3:1 and 4:1 ROI: 0 percent

  • Higher than 4:1 ROI: 2.3 percent

  • Too early to tell: 53.5 percent

  • Don't know: 27.9 percent

  • Other: 2.3 percent
