This Week's Challenge: More than 10 million Americans directly benefited from a telemedicine service during the past year, according to American Telemedicine Association estimates. Telehealth's broad reach encompasses telemedicine the use of telecommunications technology to deliver clinical diagnosis, services and patient consultations as well as the exploding field of mobile health. We wanted to see the types of technologies used in telehealth programs.

What We Learned: HIN's third annual industry survey on telehealth and telemedicine, administered in June 2013, captured data on targeted populations and conditions for telehealth programs, health activities being monitored remotely, the greatest barrier or challenge to telehealth implementation, and much more. According to the 129 healthcare companies who responded, the top five technologies in use in telehealth programs are:
- Video conferencing: 58.6 percent
- Wireless: 51.7 percent
- Data monitoring: 46.6 percent
- World Wide Web: 41.4 percent
- Smartphone apps: 32.8 percent
