Which Populations Are Served by ACOs?

Which Populations Participate in ACOs? This Week's Challenge: Participation in accountable care initiatives has more than doubled in the last 12 months, and 76 percent of healthcare companies include Medicare beneficiaries in their ACOs. However, the number of ACOs with Medicaid participants dropped from 44 percent in 2011 to 22 percent in 2012. We wanted to see which other populations participate in ACOs.

What We Learned: HIN's second annual Accountable Care Organization e-survey conducted in May 2012 captured the efforts and contributions of ACOs from 200 healthcare organizations, and also drilled down on specific trends in accountable care. According to survey respondents, the top populations that participate in ACOs are:

  • Medicare: 75.7 percent

  • Commercial: 54.1 percent

  • Medicaid: 21.6 percent

  • Uninsured: 5.4 percent
