Top 5 Mobile Health Technologies

Top 5 Mobile Health Technologies This Week's Challenge: The use of mobile health (mHealth) technologies to monitor health is revolutionizing the exchange and consumption of healthcare data. From mobile apps that monitor blood sugar and heart rhythms to text-based medication reminders, mHealth technologies could save from $1.96 billion to $5.83 billion in healthcare costs by the year 2014, some studies indicate. We wanted to see which mHealth technologies are most popular among healthcare organizations.

What We Learned: HIN's first industry survey on mHealth conducted in February 2013 captured current trends in emerging mHealth technologies. Nearly 150 healthcare organizations described the technologies they use, the conditions and populations they target, and the challenges and successes they've encountered along the way. According to the survey respondents, the top five mHealth technologies in use are:

  • Smartphone apps: 58.2 percent

  • Texting: 47.3 percent

  • Mobile Web: 41.8 percent

  • Tablet apps: 27.3 percent

  • Ambulatory monitoring: 21.8 percent
