This Week's Challenge: CDC data indicates that cigarette-smoking related healthcare expenditures in 2008 in the United States totaled nearly $96 million, and that the employer bears a cost of $3,391 per smoking employee per year, including $1,760 in lost productivity and $1,623 in excess medical expenditures. We wanted to see what components are included in tobacco cessation programs.

What We Learned: The Healthcare Intelligence Network's Smoking Cessation and Prevention Programs e-survey conducted in November 2010 captured the efforts of more than 80 organizations to curb and prevent tobacco use. According to survey respondents, the top 5 most common components included in tobacco cessation programs are:
- Health coaching: 73.9 percent
- Quitlines: 71.1 percent
- Behavioral modification: 69.6 percent
- OTC cessation aids: 67.4 percent
- Prescription cessation aids: 67.4 percent
