Key Challenges of Palliative Care

Top 5 Case Management-Patient Interactions This Week's Challenge: While the word 'palliative' literally means to cloak or conceal, healthcare is taking the wraps off this critical service in spite of provider resistance. Recent data increasingly supports the thesis that a well-timed palliative care consult can enhance the patient experience and foster appropriate use of healthcare resources. We wanted to see what type of challenges healthcare companies face in implementing palliative care.

What We Learned: HIN's inaugural industry survey on palliative care, conducted in January 2014, documented the efforts made in palliative care among over 220 healthcare companies, including how candidates are identified for palliative care, who is part of the palliative care team, and much more. According to the responding healthcare companies, the top five challenges in implementing palliative care are:

  • Timely referrals: 51.6 percent

  • Physician resistance: 48.4 percent

  • Resource allocation: 46.2 percent

  • Reimbursement: 33 percent

  • Patient buy-in: 29.7 percent
