What's the ROI from Diabetes Management Programs? This Week's Challenge: Proper control of diabetes goes beyond prescribed pills and injections to encouraging individuals with diabetes to self-manage their condition, paying ongoing attention to weight, diet, glucose levels, blood pressure and other clinical metrics. We wanted to see the ROI generated by diabetes management programs.

What We Learned: Responses to Healthcare Intelligence Network's "10 Questions On Diabetes Management Programs" survey provided qualitative data on strategies and tactics for management of this disease, program components and challenges, and outcomes, metrics and ROI. According to the 2011 survey respondents, the following ROI was generated by their program:

  • Don't know: 33.3 percent

  • Too early to tell: 30 percent

  • 2:1 to 3:1: 20 percent

  • Other: 10 percent

  • None: 3.3 percent

  • 3:1 to 4:1: 3.3 percent

  • 4:1 to 5:1: 0 percent

  • Greater than 5:1: 0 percent
