2.) Pay for Performance: Improving Quality and Efficiency of Healthcare Delivery

According to a University of Michigan study, there are currently over 20 companies operating about 300 retail clinics in the United States, and over 2,000 clinics are expected to open by the end of 2008. With this number on the rise, the Healthcare Intelligence Network conducted a non-scientific online survey in March 2007 where 254 hospitals, physician organizations, health plans and consumers weighed in on the impact of retail clinics on their business.

3.) Medicare’s Physician Quality Reporting Initiative Begins July 1

Medicare’s Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) begins July 1. PQRI is a voluntary quality reporting program and eligible providers who report data for a designated set of 74 quality measures may earn a bonus payment of 1.5 percent of total allowed charges schedule services provided from July 1 to Dec. 31.

The Physician Quality Reporting Initiative Resource Kit, a two-volume resource kit with companion CD-ROM, provides an in-depth look at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Physician Quality Reporting Initiative, examining why physician groups should participate in the voluntary program and 2007 changes to the program, including the 1.5 percent financial incentive for physicians beginning in July 2007. This comprehensive kit also includes a keyword-searchable CD-ROM of CMS' 2007 PQRI Physician Quality Measures and Specifications released on April 3, 2007.
