Many healthcare organizations are turning to telehealth and telemedicine to lower costs and improve efficiencies while expanding patients’ access to services — particularly in rural areas. Telehealth is broadly defined as the delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications technology for clinical and non-clinical purposes and encompasses telemedicine, which is the use of telecommunications technology to deliver clinical diagnosis, services and patient consultations.

The Healthcare Intelligence Network September 2009 Telehealth and Telemedicine Benchmarks e-survey set out to document trends and metrics in the use of telehealth and telemedicine and identify emerging applications of these technologies.

More than half of responding organizations — 61 percent — with telehealth initiatives target their entire population, with 18 percent focused only on the chronically ill, 11 percent on the elderly/Medicare population and less than one-tenth — 8 percent — aiming telehealth only at patients and members in rural areas.
