New Chart: Top Behavior Change Tools in Health Coaching

SUMMARY: Motivational interviewing (MI) is the top behavior change tool being used in health coaching, say 68 percent of healthcare companies that responded to HIN's fourth annual Health Coaching e-survey. We wanted to see which other behavior change tools are being used in health coaching.

HIN's Health Coaching e-survey documented how more than 150 healthcare organizations use health coaching as well as the financial and clinical outcomes that result. According to the responding companies, the top behavior change tools being used in coaching programs are:

  • MI: 68.1 percent

  • Stages of change: 63.9 percent

  • Self-efficacy: 48.6 percent

  • Social cognitive theory: 31.9 percent

  • Mindfulness: 29.2 percent

  • Health Belief Model: 26.4 percent

  • Positive psychology: 26.4 percent
