New Chart: Top Depression Screening Tools

SUMMARY: Patients with major depression are three times more likely to disregard treatment recommendations. We wanted to find out which screening tools were used most often by healthcare organizations to identify individuals suffering from depression.

The latest Healthcare Intelligence Network Depression Management e-survey captured how the healthcare industry approaches the identification and management of depression as well as trends in integration of behavioral and physical health.

More than two-thirds — 67.7 percent — of 261 survey respondents have launched programs that address depression. Here are the top screening tools they use to identify and measure depression in their populations:

  • Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9): 43 percent

  • In-house developed: 23 percent

  • Beck Depression Inventory: 8 percent

  • SF-36®: 7 percent

  • Geriatric Depression Scale: 3 percent

  • Hamilton Depression Scale: 2 percent

  • Center for Epidemiologic Studies DepressionScale (CES-D): 0 percent

  • Other: 14 percent
