New Table: Characteristics of a Value-Based Physician Compensation Model

SUMMARY: While most physician organizations are still being reimbursed or incentivize on a productivity basis, the more advanced physician organizations are moving toward total cost of care reimbursement or incentive models. We wanted to see, according to Optum, what the characteristics are for a value-based physician compensation model.

"In regards to some of the characteristics in the market, this is not a ‘one size fits all.’ This table shows some of the best practices that I have experienced in organizations across the country. First you need to risk-adjust your populations. If you are going to start to measure physicians from a population perspective, it has to be risk-adjusted. There are physicians that do more well care, and then there are physicians that have a higher burden who are good at managing a particular disease state. You need to adjust where that baseline is for physicians. That is where analytics will come into perspective."
